Small Animal Gardening Collective

Project type

Performance

Date

2012

Location

The Hammock Residency, Vancouver BC

The Small Animal Gardening Collective, conceptualized by Mireille Rosner, was a Midsummer's Eve performance that took place on June 21, 2012, at the Hammock Residency.

Meghan Rosner's burlap animal masks inspired the project which featured masked performers representing local wildlife, including Brittany Burkhard as Mouse, Luciana D’Anunciacao as Fox, Jocelyne Chaput as Raccoon, Hailey McCloskey as Porcupine, and Mireille Rosner as Squirrel.

While the audience enjoyed a bonfire celebration hosted by Heidi Nagtegaal, the performers engaged in the unseen labor of planting edible herbs, highlighting the often-unnoticed contributions to collective art spaces.

Jesse Scott managed the videography, while Jocelyn Chaput took on the editing. The performance celebrated the joy of gathering together, the role of imagination in sustainable communities, and the often-overlooked wildlife living among us.

I respectfully recognize that I live and thrive on the traditional, unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. I am dedicated to recognizing and challenging colonial perspectives and actions that hinder Indigenous self-determination. I welcome conversations and am keen to build relationships that put it into action in our everyday lives.
