March 2022, at dawn on the first day of spring, Mireille Rosner performed "It Couldn't Be Any Other Way" at Jonathan Rogers Park. The performance, captured on video and in photographs by Rosner with Jason Whiteman and Heidi Nagtegaal, involved Rosner spreading a large pile of soil, resting on a picnic blanket, onto a specific patch of lawn as a top dressing.

This act of care, both a ritual of acceptance and an act of gardening, saw the performer's body submit to the earth's ability to absorb, transform, and nourish. Through deep, physical labor, the performance embodied compassion, transformation, and the nourishment of new growth.

Project support was provided by Jesse Scott, Nova Rosner-Scott, Jason Whiteman, and Heidi Nagtegaal.

I live and create on lands where mountains meet the sea, held in the care of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations since time immemorial. These lands were never ceded, and I honor the wisdom and resilience of these First Nations and commit to walking gently, listening deeply, and creating in ways that uphold Indigenous sovereignty and respect for the earth.
