I am a star: universal landscape detection methodology

Project type

Performance Video

Date

2011

Location

Nida Art Colony, Lithuania

"Instructions:
1. Dive onto the flattest surface available, extending your limbs into a starfish pose on your belly.
2. Immerse yourself in the sensations you experience through your skin. Then, stand up.
3. Reflect on how the experience varies between locations. What insights do these differences provide about your surroundings?"

The video performance series "I am a star," conceived by Holly Holt and Mireille Rosner, uses the artist's body as a scientific instrument to interpret various landscapes through sensory experiences. The project included creating maps of the area surrounding Nida Art Colony, Curonian Spit (Lithuania), and The Hammock Residency (Vancouver, Canada), with videography by Jesse Scott. The final video series was exhibited at The Performing Document, curated by Vanessa Brown, Library at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, Vancouver, 2011; and Genius Loci, curated by Vytautas Michelkevičius and Yulia Startsev, Nida Art Colony, Lithuania, 2012.

I respectfully recognize that I live and thrive on the traditional, unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. I am dedicated to recognizing and challenging colonial perspectives and actions that hinder Indigenous self-determination. I welcome conversations and am keen to build relationships that put it into action in our everyday lives.
