Dance Letters

Project type

Performance & Writing

Date

2012

Location

The Hammock Residency/ Thoughts on Text, Access Gallery, Vancouver BC

Dance Letters investigated the connections between intimately sourced personal movement and letter writing. The project was ongoing since 2009, and dances had been initiated over long-distances via snail mail, or through individual in-person interviews. A series of questions instigated the contact between writer/choreographer and dancer, and through a relaxed and intimate exchange physical ideas were transmitted by the written word.

The process from interview to final letter was surprisingly physical, but in an indirect and sometimes even metaphoric sense. Personal dance letters, whether or not they were generated through the mail or in person, contained images, exercises, and other prompts to engage the senses and cultivate a thinking body. The piece was presented at The Hammock Residency's Thoughts on Text. Access Gallery, Vancouver, 2012.

I respectfully recognize that I live and thrive on the traditional, unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. I am dedicated to recognizing and challenging colonial perspectives and actions that hinder Indigenous self-determination. I welcome conversations and am keen to build relationships that put it into action in our everyday lives.
